Bruce Campbell

Senior Consultant

Codes, Alternative Solutions

Bruce Campbell joined Gage-Babcock & Associates in 1979 after graduating from the British Columbia Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology. Initially hired as a sprinkler designer, Bruce also learned to design fire alarm systems, halon and other special suppression systems. In 1986, Bruce worked on loan as the fire alarms plan reviewer for Expo 86.

In the mid-eighties, Bruce switched his focus to the building code, and quickly gained a thorough knowledge of the code by writing a plain language version of the 1985 National Building Code for use on Indian Reserves throughout British Columbia. Bruce now practices exclusively as a code consultant and specializes in a "hands-on" approach, working closely with his clients to develop innovative design strategies (including code equivalencies) where necessary that provide acceptable levels of fire and life safety without compromising the design objectives of the project. In recent years, Bruce has expanded his area of expertise to include design of fire safety measures for hazardous industrial operations, including the challenges presented by the new processes associated with high tech industries.

Now in his 22nd year with GBA, Bruce is a lecturer for the Certified Professional Course at the University of British Columbia and enjoys working on a wide range of projects, particularly those that involve old buildings, where the degree of difficulty in finding a successful solution is usually directly proportional to the age of the building!
