Gerd graduated from engineering in 1962 in Vienna, Austria and earned his engineering registration
as "Ingenieur" by the Austrian State in June 1967.

After working in the Department for Thermal and Nuclear Power Stations for Brown Boveri, now ABB, in Switzerland, Gerd moved to Vancouver in 1965. The first years saw him employed in the pulp and paper industry with a change into the irrigation field as Manager, Engineering Division.

1975 was the beginning of his career in the fire protection industry, becoming Grinnell Fire Protection's District Engineering Manager, Western Region. This period allowed him to understand all facets of sprinkler protection.
After being employed by ICBC as Assistant Manager, Loss Prevention General Underwriting, and being exposed to loss prevention principals while acting as Authority Having Jurisdiction, he joined a major fire protection consultant as their sprinkler system and contract administration specialist.

In 1988 Gerd joined GBA as Senior Consultant to apply his broad experience as a contractor, a loss prevention specialist and a consultant.

Gerd has served as President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), Vancouver Chapter, Tutor and Reviewer for the Open Learning Institute Sprinkler Course 1 & 2 and has been registered as a Member of the National Society of Fire Protection Engineering since 1982.
